Dr. Bayer is an FAA-approved neuropsychologist

The FAA requires neuropsychological testing to ensure that pilots and other aviation personnel have the cognitive abilities necessary to safely operate aircraft. Dr. Bayer is currently accepting referrals for those 18 years of age and older, for the following evaluations:

  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition that may be aeromedically disqualifying. It is Dr. Bayer’s responsibility to identify any neurocognitive deficits/impairments that have aeromedical significance.

  • Depressive disorders and medications used to treat these conditions are medically disqualifying for pilots and ATCS. However, the FAA has established a policy for Authorizations for Special Issuance (SI) of medical certificates for pilots and Special Consideration (SC) clearance for those prescribed with one of several specific antidepressant medications.

Those found eligible for SI or SC are required to undergo periodic re-evaluations, and may be limited to the CogScreen-AE or expanded to include additional neuropsychological tests.

  • Head trauma, stroke, multiple sclerosis, other suspected acquired or developmental conditions may produce cognitive deficits hindering a persons ability to safely perform pilot duties. A neuropsychological evaluation is thereby needed to ensure the absence of any aeromedically significant cognitive deficits.

  • Persons who are infected with HIV and who do not have a diagnosis of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) may be considered for any class medical certificate, if otherwise qualified.

Comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation is required at the time of initial application to help determine if cognitive function is sufficient for safe flight operations.

If granted, Authorization for Special Issuance will specify follow-up requirements, including the frequency and type of testing.
